What to Look for in a Luxury Chalet

When choosing among the luxury ski chalets in Cervinia & Valtournenche, here are features that really make a difference:

    • Location & Access: Ski-in or very close to lifts is a big plus. Some chalets are almost on the slope.
    • Views: Facing the Matterhorn or wide mountain ranges elevates every moment—sunrise, sunset, or snowfall.
    • Amenities: Spa, indoor pool, cinema, gourmet kitchens, and staff (chef, cleaning, concierge) can turn a great holiday into a memorable one.
    • Privacy vs. Community: Some chalets are secluded in nature; others are closer to villages. Decide what vibe you prefer.
    • Design & Materials: Alpine warmth (wood, stone), modern comforts, eco-friendly features, good heating, soundproofing.

    Why Cervinia & Valtournenche Shine

These linked locations are among the highest in altitude in the Alps, which means good snow reliability. Also, the infrastructure (lift systems, access, restaurants) is excellent. You get the dual benefit: remote chalet luxury AND ease of reaching slopes. And with chalets like those above, you can have an intimate retreat that doesn’t skimp on style or service.

    Final Suggestion

If you’re dreaming of staying in one of the luxury ski chalets in Cervinia & Valtournenche:

    • Book well in advance, especially in peak season (Christmas, New Year, February).
    • Ask about included services (chef, spa treatments, transfers) to avoid surprises.
    • Check the exact location and route to lifts—weather or wind can affect lift access.
    • Request chalet photos or virtual tour to get a feel for design and ambiance.

Recently renovated, this five-star resort offers extensive wellness facilities, multiple dining options, spacious accommodations, and excellent services tailored to skiers and families alike.

How to Choose the Right Luxury Hotel in Cervinia

Every traveller has different priorities, so consider the following before booking:

    Location

Some hotels provide direct access to the slopes, while others offer quieter settings with shuttle services.

    Wellness Facilities

If spa experiences are important to you, compare pools, saunas, treatment rooms, and relaxation areas.

    Style

Some properties focus on traditional alpine charm, while others embrace modern luxury and contemporary design.

    Views

Many luxury hotels offer incredible Matterhorn views, but some enjoy more panoramic positions than others.

    Atmosphere

Families, couples, and groups often look for different experiences, so choose a hotel that matches your preferred environment.

Why Luxury Hotels in Cervinia Offer Exceptional Value

Compared to many luxury ski destinations in Switzerland or France, Cervinia often delivers outstanding value.

Guests enjoy world-class skiing, reliable snow conditions, breathtaking scenery, premium accommodation, and exceptional Italian hospitality—all while often paying significantly less than in comparable resorts across the Alps.

For many visitors, Cervinia represents one of the best luxury ski experiences available anywhere in Europe.

    When Should You Book?

The most desirable hotels often sell out months in advance, particularly during Christmas, New Year, February school holidays, and Easter.

For the best combination of snow conditions, sunshine, and availability, I often recommend late February through April. Spring skiing in Cervinia can be absolutely fantastic thanks to the resort’s high altitude and glacier access.

As a local ski instructor, I’m always happy to help you choose the right ski pass, recommend the best slopes for your ability and help you organise your entire ski holiday in Cervinia.

  • Valle d’Aosta Joins Ikon Pass: A Game-Changer for Skiers

Valle d’Aosta Joins Ikon Pass: A Game-Changer for Skiers

Good news is on the horizon for winter sports lovers: Valle d’Aosta joins Ikon Pass starting in the 2025-26 season, positioning the region among the most exclusive ski destinations in the world.

From next winter, five of the region’s most iconic ski areas—including Courmayeur Mont Blanc, Cervino Ski Paradise, La Thuile Espace San Bernardo, Monterosa Ski, and Pila—will welcome Ikon Pass holders. Full Impressions: holders of the full Ikon Pass get seven total days, while Ikon Base Pass holders receive five days—all with no blackout dates. stormskiing.com

    Why This Matters

    Mappa Piste Cervinia-Zermatt 2026 2027

Valle d’Aosta joins Ikon Pass marks a pivotal moment in its international ski tourism strategy. Previously, only European resorts like Dolomiti Superski and Zermatt were included. Now, with the “VdA” firmly on the map, skiers from North America and beyond can access the Italian Alps with unparalleled ease and prestige.

Among the five linked destinations, Cervino borders directly with Zermatt Matterhorn, and Courmayeur offers quick access to Chamonix via Mont Blanc tunnel—perfect for border-hopping adventures.

A Historic Step: Valle d’Aosta Joins Ikon Pass

With the official entry into Ikon Pass, Valle d’Aosta is making history. Starting from the 2025/26 season, the six most representative ski lift companies of the region – Cervino Ski Paradise, Courmayeur Mont Blanc Funivie, La Thuile Espace San Bernardo, Monterosa Ski, Pila, and Skyway Monte Bianco – will be accessible to holders of the world-famous international ski pass.

Ikon Pass, developed by Alterra Mountain Company in Denver (Colorado), currently includes 63 destinations across 11 countries and 5 continents. In Europe, until now, the network only featured top-tier ski areas such as Grandvalira, Kitzbühel, Ischgl, Chamonix Mont-Blanc Valley, Zermatt, St. Moritz, and Dolomiti Superski.

The entry of Valle d’Aosta therefore represents a true recognition of the work carried out in recent years by the local lift companies, who have invested heavily in modernization, sustainability, and services. This move not only positions the region among the world’s elite skiing destinations but also highlights Italy’s growing influence in the global ski tourism market.

What It Signals for the Region

Joining Ikon Pass is not just a marketing move—it’s economic dynamite. Previous European entries like Zermatt and Dolomiti Superski saw significant increases in tourism from U.S. skiers. That same potential now shines on Valle d’Aosta, showcasing its alpine charm, culinary heritage, and scenic magnificence to new global audiences.

    Final Thoughts

In short, Valle d’Aosta joins Ikon Pass is more than a partnership—it’s a bridge. It connects iconic Italian slopes with a premier global ski community. If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring Italian Alpine traditions while skirting across Swiss snow, this is your season.

As a local ski instructor, I’m always happy to help you choose the right ski pass, recommend the best slopes for your ability and help you organise your entire ski holiday in Cervinia.

  • Cervino The One Ski Lift: A Leap Into the Future of Cervinia

Cervino The One Ski Lift: A Leap Into the Future of Cervinia

Cervinia is preparing for a revolution in Alpine skiing with the launch of Cervino The One ski lift. Announced on August 22, this ambitious €200 million project will reshape the way skiers and visitors experience the Alps. The state-of-the-art 3S gondola will link Breuil-Cervinia to Plateau Rosa in only 17 minutes, cutting travel time by more than half compared to today’s 50 minutes.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 and finish in 2030. Once completed, this futuristic lift will combine the efficiency of a cable car with the comfort of a gondola, featuring long spans, steep gradients, and cabins capable of carrying 30 passengers. The line will stretch for nearly six kilometers, with a total elevation gain of 1,427 meters.

    Capacity, Speed, and Comfort

Cervino The One ski lift has been designed with record-breaking performance in mind. With an hourly capacity of 3,000 passengers, wind stability up to 100 km/h, and speeds reaching 8 meters per second (around 29 km/h), it promises smooth and reliable transport even in challenging conditions.

The 56 Symphony model cabins will feature 360-degree panoramic windows, heated leather-style seating for 24 people, internal ski racks, anti-slip flooring, multimedia screens, and advanced communication systems. Everything has been planned to maximize comfort and safety for skiers traveling to the Plateau Rosa at 3,458 meters.

    A Sustainable and Secure Future

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the Cervino The One ski lift project. Thanks to DirectDrive motors, which run at just 33 rotations per minute, energy consumption will be reduced, while noise emissions will stay below 85 decibels — remarkable for an installation of this size.

On the safety side, the lift will include four independent drive systems (main, reserve, recovery, and emergency) as well as three braking systems, ensuring minimal risk of stoppages even during power outages.

    Stations and Infrastructure

The new lift will not only transform the ride but also the stations themselves. The base station at 2,031 meters will become a modern hub with ticket offices, rental services, shops, bars, and restaurants. The mid-station at Plan Maison (2,550 meters) will integrate with existing lifts and include restaurants, commercial areas, and even an underground automated warehouse for cabins and equipment.

At the top, the Plateau Rosa station (3,458 meters) will be carved into the rock, directly connecting with Switzerland’s Klein Matterhorn facilities, completed in 2023.

Architecturally, the project will blend stone, reinforced concrete, glass, and wood for a sleek yet natural finish, with zinc-titanium roofing and photovoltaic panels to generate clean energy.

The Investment Behind Cervino The One

The Cervino The One ski lift is backed by an investment of approximately €200 million. The Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta has already allocated €70 million, while Cervino Spa will cover the rest through self-financing, bank loans, and recent strong financial performance.

Construction will be led by Leitner, a leader in ropeway technology, alongside a consortium of local companies handling civil works.

Why It Matters for Skiers and Visitors

By 2030, Cervinia will no longer just be a top ski destination — it will become a symbol of modern Alpine tourism. The Cervino The One ski lift will drastically improve accessibility, enhance comfort, and provide a sustainable model for future mountain transport.

For skiers, this means less time commuting and more time on the slopes. For visitors, it represents an easier and more enjoyable way to discover the beauty of the Alps.

    Final Thoughts

The unveiling of Cervino The One ski lift is more than just the announcement of new infrastructure. It’s a bold vision of the future, blending innovation, sustainability, and Alpine tradition. By 2030, Cervinia will stand at the forefront of world-class mountain resorts, ready to welcome thousands of visitors in a faster, safer, and more comfortable way.

Where tradition meets innovation, the future of Alpine skiing has a new name: Cervino The One.

    See you on the slopes,

  • How to Book a Ski Holiday: Expert Tips for an Unforgettable Winter Vacation

How to Book a Ski Holiday: Expert Tips for an Unforgettable Winter Vacation

When winter approaches, many travelers dream of snowy mountains, thrilling descents, and cozy evenings in alpine lodges. But knowing how to book a ski holiday the right way can make the difference between a stressful trip and an unforgettable experience. Whether you are planning your first winter vacation or you are a seasoned skier, here are the essential tips to make your ski trip perfect.

    1. Choose the Right Time for Your Ski Holiday

Timing is everything. December and January are usually the coldest months, with plenty of snow but also shorter days—the sun often disappears by late afternoon. From March onward, days get longer and temperatures more pleasant, offering more time on the slopes. Interestingly, in the last couple of seasons, March has brought heavier snowfall than January, breaking the old rule that only the deep winter months guarantee the best powder.

If your goal is to avoid the crowds, it’s best to skip peak holiday dates like Christmas, New Year, Half Term, and Easter. However, if what you want is vibrant nightlife and big après-ski parties, then those busy weeks might be exactly what you need.

    2. Pick the Right Ski Resort

Your choice of resort will define the atmosphere of your ski holiday. In Italy, two standout options are Cervinia and Courmayeur.

    • Cervinia Ski Holiday: Perfect if your main focus is skiing and enjoying good food and wine. Cervinia offers wide, sunny slopes, incredible views of the Matterhorn, and a more relaxed atmosphere. It’s not the place for heavy nightlife, but ideal for families and those who value great skiing and fine dining. https://www.cervinia.it/inverno/home
    • Courmayeur Ski Holiday: If you are a more advanced skier or snowboarder and love mixing sports with nightlife, Courmayeur is your best bet. The technical slopes challenge even experienced skiers, and the town itself boasts trendy bars andhttps://www.cervinia.it/inverno/home a couple of excellent nightclubs. It’s a great choice for those who want to balance skiing with stylish evenings out. https://www.courmayeur-montblanc.com/en/

    3. Decide How Early to Book

One of the most common questions is: when is the best time to book a ski holiday? The rule of thumb is: the earlier, the better—especially if you want the best choice of hotels, apartments, or ski chalets. By booking in advance, you can secure lower prices and lock in ski passes before they sell out during high demand weeks.

Last-minute deals do exist, but they are risky, particularly if you are tied to specific dates or traveling with family. For a stress-free experience, plan ahead.

    4. Balance Budget and Comfort

Ski holidays can be expensive, but with smart planning you can keep costs under control. Consider mid-week stays instead of weekends, which often come at premium prices. Package deals including ski passes and rentals can also be more cost-effective than booking everything separately.

If you’re aiming for luxury, resorts like Courmayeur offer stylish hotels and gourmet dining. For a balance of price and experience, Cervinia provides excellent value without compromising on the skiing.

    5. Think About Ski Lessons and Guides

If you are new to skiing or want to improve your technique, booking lessons with a certified ski instructor is a must. Having a professional guide also helps you discover the best slopes suited to your level and even secret off-piste spots if conditions allow. Booking your lessons in advance is as important as booking accommodation, especially during high season.

    6. Don’t Forget Après-Ski and Off-Slope Activities

Skiing is only part of the experience. A successful ski holiday combines time on the slopes with great après-ski moments. Italy is particularly famous for its food culture: enjoy hearty mountain dishes, Italian wine, and relaxing evenings in alpine lodges.

If nightlife is a priority, Courmayeur delivers with stylish bars and clubs. For those who prefer quieter evenings with stunning views, Cervinia is unbeatable.

Final Thoughts: Plan Smart, Ski Better

Knowing how to book a ski holiday means understanding your goals, choosing the right resort, and planning at the right time. Italy offers diverse options for every type of skier: Cervinia for breathtaking slopes and food lovers, Courmayeur for advanced skiers and nightlife fans. By booking early, avoiding peak weeks (unless parties are your priority), and tailoring the experience to your preferences, you’ll set yourself up for a ski holiday that’s as smooth as freshly groomed snow.

  • Planning Your Ski Trip : Why Booking Early Makes All the Difference

Planning Your Ski Trip : Why Booking Early Makes All the Difference

Planning Your Ski Trip : Why Booking Early Makes All the Difference

While many people are enjoying summer holidays, something very different is happening in the Alps.

Every week, I receive emails from families, couples and groups already planning their next ski holiday in Cervinia. Some are booking six months in advance, while others have been reserving the same week every year for more than a decade.

If you’re thinking about skiing in Cervinia this winter, my advice is simple:

    Don’t wait too long.

Booking early doesn’t just give you more options, it often makes the entire holiday more enjoyable.

    https://www.skiwithriky.com/plan-your-ski-holiday/

Planning Your Ski Trip : Why Booking Early Makes All the Difference

Why More Skiers Are Booking Earlier Every Year

The popularity of Cervinia continues to grow.

Its high altitude, reliable snow conditions, connection with Zermatt and long ski season attract visitors from all over the world. As a result, the most popular weeks—Christmas, New Year, February half-term holidays and Easter—are often planned months in advance.

The earlier you organise your trip, the easier it becomes to find exactly what you’re looking for.

    Better Hotels, Better Choice

One of the biggest advantages of booking early is accommodation.

The most popular hotels—especially those close to the ski lifts or offering Matterhorn views—are usually the first to sell out.

Whether you’re looking for a luxury five-star hotel, a cosy family-run property or an apartment in the centre of Cervinia, booking several months ahead gives you a much wider choice.

Waiting until autumn often means compromising on location, room type or budget.

    https://www.skiwithriky.com/best-hotels-cervinia-center-near-slopes/

Secure Your Preferred Ski Lesson Times

This is something many visitors don’t realise.

Every winter I receive requests from guests who would love to book lessons, but unfortunately my schedule is already full.

School holidays and peak weeks fill up quickly, especially for private lessons.

Booking your ski instructor early allows you to choose the days, times and lesson format that work best for your holiday, rather than having to adapt to limited availability.

Whether you’re a beginner, an experienced skier wanting to improve your technique, or a family looking for lessons together, planning ahead gives you much greater flexibility.

The Best Restaurants Also Fill Up

Cervinia has become well known for its mountain restaurants and cosy alpine dining.

Many of the most popular places, especially those with spectacular views or limited seating, are fully booked during busy weeks.

Planning ahead means you can enjoy memorable lunches on the mountain and relaxed dinners in the village without spending your holiday searching for a table at the last minute.

    https://www.skiwithriky.com/best-restaurants-in-cervinia-village/

    Less Stress, More Skiing

A ski holiday should be exciting—not stressful.

My goal is to make your holiday as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

    My Personal Advice

After spending every winter on these mountains, I’ve noticed one thing.

The guests who enjoy their holiday the most are rarely the ones who booked at the last minute.

They’re the ones who planned ahead.

They stay in the hotel they really wanted.

They ski with the instructor they chose.

They have dinner where they wanted to eat.

Everything feels relaxed because the important decisions were made long before they packed their suitcase.

That’s exactly the experience I want every guest to have.

Start Planning Your Winter Escape Today

Winter may still seem far away, but the best time to organise your ski holiday is often during the summer.

A little planning now can make a huge difference once the snow starts falling.

If you’re already thinking about your next trip to Cervinia, I’d be delighted to help you create a holiday that’s tailored to you, your family or your group.

Missing Winter in Cervinia: Watch My Favorite Ski Videos

It’s August. The sun is shining, the days are long, and everyone’s heading to the beach… but honestly?
I’m just missing winter in Cervinia.

There’s something about the sound of skis carving on fresh snow, the cold mountain air hitting your face on the chairlift, and that unbeatable feeling of floating on powder. Summer is beautiful, sure—but my heart is still on the slopes.

That’s why, when the temperatures rise and I start dreaming of snow, I go back to my YouTube channel and rewatch some of my favorite ski runs. It’s like a time machine to my happiest days on the mountain.

If you’re like me and already counting down the days until the ski season starts again, here are a few videos that will bring you straight back to the slopes of Cervinia.

    Why I Keep Watching

For me, skiing isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of life. Every time I’m missing winter in Cervinia, I remind myself why I love what I do. Teaching, guiding, and skiing are more than a job. They’re my passion.

These videos aren’t just about technique or terrain. They’re about memories, feelings, and a deep connection to the mountains. And until the snow falls again, this is how I keep the spirit alive.

    Can You Relate?

If you’re also missing winter in Cervinia, I’d love to know:

    • Do you have a favorite video or memory from the slopes?

    Until the Snow Returns…

I’ll keep checking webcams, organizing gear, and maybe watching just one more video. Because even in August, winter is never too far away—especially when Cervinia is calling.

  • 🏔️ Stay Safe on the Slopes: Italy Extends Ski Helmet Mandate to All Ages

🏔️ Stay Safe on the Slopes: Italy Extends Ski Helmet Mandate to All Ages

Italy is taking a big step toward making ski slopes safer for everyone. A new amendment to the sports law (Decreto‑Legge 96/2025) now requires that skiers of all ages wear helmets—not just minors. Approved this July by the culture commission of the Chamber of Deputies, the law is expected to go to the full Assembly at Montecitorio imminently.

From Minor to Adult: The Helmet Rule Evolves

Until now, Italy’s legislation only required skiers under 18 to wear a helmet, based on the earlier reform (DLgs 40/2021). But championing safety, Deputy Fabrizio Sala (FI) introduced an amendment that extends the requirement to everyoneskiing, regardless of age salto.bz.

    Why the Change?

According to Sala, protecting one’s head on the slopes is “simple, low-cost, and can save lives.” He called it “a concrete step toward promoting a culture of prevention and responsibility” among all winter sports enthusiasts, not only teenagers.

    Penalties and Enforcement

For those who refuse to comply, the law introduces serious consequences. First-time offenders face a fine, and repeat offenders will have their ski pass suspended or revoked for 1 to 3 days. That kind of deterrent is meant to ensure proper compliance on the slopes.

    More Safety Measures Are Coming

In addition to the helmet rule, another amendment will require all municipalities near ski resorts to set up clearly marked rescue vehicle zones for ambulances and air rescue services. They must also install at least one automated external defibrillator (AED) at every resort facility.

    What It Means for Skiers

If you ski in Italy—from the beginner slopes to off-piste adventures—this change means one helmet fits all. Whether you’re 8 or 80, groomed trail or advanced couloir, the law expects you to wear protection. It’s a reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

While many adult skiers already wear helmets out of habit or personal preference, this amendment marks a cultural shift: helmet-wearing is no longer optional, it’s legislated.

A Broader Movement Toward Mountain Safety

Italy isn’t alone in pushing helmet use in winter sports. Many Alpine countries are emphasizing protective gear not just for youth, but for adult recreational skiers too. This new legislation aligns Italy with rising safety standards across Europe.

    The Bottom Line

    • ✅ Italy ski helmet mandate now applies to adults and minors alike.
    • ✅ Fines and skipass suspension for repeat non‑compliance.
    • ✅ Rescue zones and AEDs required at all ski areas.
    • ✅ Promotes a long-term culture of responsibility on the slopes.

Wearing a helmet isn’t just a personal choice—it’s becoming a legal obligation. For those who love the mountains—whether skiing, snowboarding, or taking a scenic ride—this law emphasizes care, caution, and community safety.

  • A Summer Night Full of Music and Memories

A Summer Night Full of Music and Memories

Last weekend, I had the chance to attend a very special concert in my hometown, Albissola Marina. The concert took place in the beautiful gardens of Villa Faraggiana and was performed by an all-female choir—which includes none other than my mom!

This year, the entire setlist was a tribute to the iconic Swedish band ABBA. I’ll admit: ABBA isn’t exactly my go-to genre… but the performance truly surprised me. The energy, the voices, and the positive vibe were contagious. It was one of those evenings where you can’t help but smile, even if you’ve heard Dancing Queen one too many times.

More than 400 people attended the concert, which created a great atmosphere. What impressed me the most, though, was the sound quality. Singing outdoors in a garden, as a choir, is never easy—the acoustics can be unpredictable. But they nailed it. Clear, balanced, and powerful voices filled the night air, and the audience responded with standing ovations and loud applause.

The event had a real sense of community. Alongside friends and family, many locals came to support the choir, making the evening feel even more meaningful. I felt proud watching my mom on stage, doing what she loves and doing it so well.

And speaking of things I love…

Here comes a small off-topic detour: while I was still basking in the afterglow of the concert, I got news that made me equally happy—it snowed up at Plateau Rosa and Bontadini, high above Cervinia! Just a light dusting, but still. Every snowfall in summer feels magical, no matter how little.

Of course, it won’t stop the glaciers from melting or bring back the golden days of summer skiing, but every flake is a reminder of why I care so much about the mountains. It’s not just about skiing—it’s about the emotion that comes with snow, even in July.

Back to the concert, though—I’m planning to edit a short video recap of the event soon. It’s not every day you get to celebrate good music, community spirit, and your mom rocking the stage all in one night.

    See you soon

  • 🇮🇹 100 Years of Stories: Celebrating Grandpa Piero’s Century of Life 🎂🌿

🇮🇹 100 Years of Stories: Celebrating Grandpa Piero’s Century of Life 🎂🌿

Some moments are so special that they leave a mark not just in your memory, but deep in your heart. This past week, we celebrated one of those moments — the 100th birthday of my grandfather, Pietro, or as everyone affectionately calls him, Peu. Reaching a century of life is already something extraordinary, but celebrating it surrounded by love, laughter, and legacy made it truly unforgettable.

A Garden Full of Life and Stories 🌳❤️

We chose to host the celebration in the garden — a place that has seen generations of our family grow, and where many memories have been shared. But this wasn’t just a typical family gathering. Dozens of people came to celebrate Grandpa Piero, not only relatives, but also longtime friends, neighbors, and even the Mayor of Albissola Marina, who joined us for the occasion.

Seeing so many familiar faces gathered together, all united to honor my grandfather’s life, was deeply moving. Everyone came with a story to tell, a photo to show, or simply to give him a hug and a smile. It was a true celebration of community — one that reflected the impact this incredible man has had on the lives around him.

A Life Marked by Courage and Kindness 🇮🇹🌟

For those who don’t know, Piero (Peu) is a former partisan — a man who fought during difficult times for values he believed in, and who has lived a life of courage, simplicity, and honesty. His story is part of Italy’s story, and now, at 100 years old, he continues to inspire us with his humility and strength.

During the celebration, the Mayor of Albissola paid tribute to him with a short speech, and even local media joined in to commemorate the event. One of the articles that came out about the celebration perfectly captured the spirit of the day. You can read it here.

A Personal Project: Capturing His Story on Camera 🎥📖

To make sure these memories — and above all, his voice and his thoughts — are never lost, I’ve started working on a video project: an interview with my grandfather, where he shares parts of his life and the lessons he’s learned across ten incredible decades.

We’ve already started filming. Sometimes it’s just a short story, a smile, a memory from when he was a child… other times, he opens up about the war, about family, about love. I can already tell that this will be one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever worked on. Not just for me — but for our whole family, and for those who want to understand more about the past from someone who lived it in full.

    The Power of Legacy 🕊️

The celebration made me think a lot about legacy — about what it means to leave something behind. Grandpa Piero hasn’t just lived 100 years; he’s filled those years with purpose, kindness, and integrity. His legacy is not made of medals or trophies, but of people — those who came to celebrate him, and those who carry a piece of his story in their hearts.

In today’s fast world, we sometimes forget the value of listening to those who came before us. This birthday was a reminder to slow down, to ask questions, to listen. There’s so much to learn from someone who has truly lived through a century of history, challenges, and change.

    Looking Ahead with Gratitude 🌅

As the sun went down on the garden that day, with music playing and voices laughing, I felt incredibly lucky. Lucky to have such a grandfather, lucky to share this moment with my family, and lucky to be able to capture it — not just in photos and videos, but in feelings.

Thank you Grandpa Peu, for everything you’ve given us.
Happy 100th birthday — and here’s to the memories we’ve made, and those still to come. 🥂

  • 🌨️ High Temperatures and High Altitude: Back on the Glacier in Cervinia

🌨️ High Temperatures and High Altitude: Back on the Glacier in Cervinia

This past week, I returned to Cervinia — one of my favorite places in the world — but this time, it wasn’t for the usual skiing or teaching sessions. Instead, I had the chance to experience the glacier from a completely new perspective: as part of a commercial shoot for Swiss television. And let me tell you, it was a challenge!

When Summer Hits the Slopes ☀️🎿

You might be thinking, “Skiing in July?” Well, yes — but skiing in summer is a different beast entirely. The Cervinia glacier remains open for a limited time during the summer months, allowing for high-altitude skiing above Plan Maison and up to Plateau Rosà. However, the biggest obstacle during this time isn’t the terrain… it’s the temperature.

Unfortunately, this week the thermometer wasn’t on our side. Even during the night, the temperature barely dropped below +4°C, which is far too warm for the snow to refreeze properly. As a result, the snow surface didn’t compact overnight, meaning by early morning it was already soft, slushy, and difficult to manage — even more so if you’re trying to make ski turns look perfect for the camera.

A Different Kind of Work Day 🎥

Unlike most of my trips to the glacier, this time I wasn’t there to teach or train. Instead, I found myself in front of a film crew, lights, mics… and a lot of pressure. I had been cast to act in a television commercial for a Swiss production. I can’t share too many details just yet (TV secrets!), but I can say that it involved putting on my ski gear and playing the part of… well, myself.

That may sound easy, but trust me — being a ski instructor in real life and acting as one on screen are two completely different things! Delivering lines while maintaining perfect ski form and dealing with inconsistent snow conditions was a real test. Still, I embraced the challenge, and I think it turned out well.

A Familiar Face on the Glacier 🙌

One of the highlights of this unexpected work trip was bumping into Nicola, a fellow ski instructor and someone I’m incredibly proud of. A few years ago, I helped train Nicola when he was preparing for his exams, and seeing him now working on the glacier as a certified ski instructor made me feel proud.

There’s a special kind of satisfaction that comes from watching someone you’ve mentored succeed. Nicola’s dedication and hard work paid off, and to know I played a small part in his journey is incredibly rewarding. We snapped a quick photo together to remember the moment — a symbol of how the ski world always finds a way to bring people back together.

    Escaping the Heat 🧊➡️🔥

While the skiing conditions weren’t ideal, one major upside of heading to the mountains was escaping the intense heat. Down in Liguria, we had been stuck in a full-blown heatwave, with temperatures hovering around 35°C every day. Being on the glacier at over 3,000 meters felt like stepping into a different world — fresher air, fewer people, and that crisp mountain breeze I had missed so much.

Even though I wasn’t there for a typical ski trip, I soaked in every second of that cool air, the dramatic Alpine views, and the unique energy of summer skiing. And the good news? The temperatures are finally starting to drop, which means better snow conditions are just around the corner. With colder nights ahead, the snow will hopefully start to set properly again, making way for improved skiing in the coming weeks.

    What’s Next? ⛷️

I’m back home now, still sweating a bit in the summer sun but feeling grateful for the short escape to higher altitudes. This unexpected adventure reminded me how varied and unpredictable life can be — one week I’m fishing or biking, the next I’m filming a commercial on a glacier.

As always, I’ll keep sharing what I’m up to here on the blog, and you can follow the behind-the-scenes and daily updates on Instagram (@riccardovaraldo) — where I might just drop a sneak peek from the shoot when the time is right 😉.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned — new stories coming soon!
