From Beginners to Red Slopes: My Amazing Week with Five Irish Kids in Valtournenche

As a ski instructor, every week on the slopes brings new challenges and unforgettable experiences. This past week in Valtournenche, I had the privilege of skiing with five amazing Irish kids, including a 3.5-year-old! They arrived on Tuesday as complete beginners, and by Sunday, they were confidently skiing red slopes—some of the most challenging runs in the area. Watching their rapid progress and seeing their enthusiasm grow each day was truly rewarding.

    The First Steps on Skis

On the first day, these five young skiers had never been on skis before. As with all beginners, our focus was on balance, basic movements, and confidence on the snow. We started with simple exercises on flat terrain, helping them get comfortable with their skis and movements. For the youngest skier, just standing up after a fall was an accomplishment worth celebrating!

After a few hours, they started gliding down gentle slopes on their own, getting a feel for how skis move and how to stop. It was incredible to see how quickly they picked up the basics and how much fun they were having despite a few tumbles.

    Building Skills and Confidence

By the second and third day, we moved on to slightly steeper blue slopes. The kids learned how to control their speed, make basic turns, and, most importantly, trust their own abilities. One of the biggest breakthroughs came when they realized that skiing is not just about technique but also about having fun and enjoying the mountain.

The 3.5-year-old was a true inspiration. Despite being the youngest, he showed an incredible determination to keep up with the older kids. His confidence grew with each run, and by mid-week, he was skiing independently with a huge smile on his face.

The Big Challenge: Red Slopes in Valtournenche

By Saturday, these kids had progressed far beyond expectations. They had mastered their turns, controlled their speed, and were eager for a new challenge. That challenge came in the form of Valtournenche’s red slopes—steeper, longer, and technically more demanding.

At first, they were nervous. The thought of skiing a difficult slope can be intimidating, but after a pep talk and some encouragement, they were ready to go. One by one, they tackled the descent, following my instructions and using all the skills they had learned during the week. Their determination and excitement were contagious, and by the time we reached the bottom, they were cheering and high-fiving each other. It was a moment of pure joy and a testament to their incredible progress.

The Parents’ Reactions and Future Plans

The biggest compliment any ski instructor can receive is seeing happy students and satisfied parents. After their final run, the parents told me how thrilled they were with their kids’ progress. They never imagined their children would go from absolute beginners to skiing red slopes in just a few days.

Even more rewarding was hearing that they are already planning to come back next season. The kids were so excited about their skiing journey that they can’t wait to hit the slopes again next winter. Knowing that I played a part in igniting their passion for skiing is the best feeling in the world.

Why Valtournenche is Perfect for Learning to Ski

One of the reasons this experience was so successful is that Valtournenche is a fantastic destination for learning to ski. With a variety of slopes, from gentle beginner-friendly runs to more challenging red and black slopes, it offers the perfect environment for progressive learning. The stunning scenery and excellent snow conditions make it an ideal location for skiers of all levels.

If you’re looking for a ski destination where beginners can quickly gain confidence and advanced skiers can challenge themselves, Valtournenche is the place to be!

    Final Thoughts

Teaching these five Irish kids was an unforgettable experience. Their enthusiasm, determination, and joy made every moment on the slopes special. From the first nervous steps to confidently skiing red slopes, their progress was truly inspiring.

This week reminded me why I love teaching skiing. Watching students overcome their fears, push their limits, and fall in love with the sport is an experience that never gets old. I can’t wait to see these kids back on the slopes next season, ready for even bigger challenges!

See you on the slopes! ⛷️❄️

My Skis: Mach Eagle 182 cm with a 17m Radius

As a passionate skier and instructor, finding the perfect pair of skis is no small feat. After testing countless models over the years, I’ve finally found a pair that ticks all the boxes: the Eagle Mach 182 cm skis with a 17m radius. Let me tell you why these skis have completely transformed my time on the slopes.

    Versatility at Its Finest

One of the standout features of the Eagle Mach 182 cm skis with 17m radius is their versatility. As an all-mountain model, these skis are designed to handle a wide range of conditions and terrains. Whether I’m carving perfect turns on groomed slopes or navigating through powder off-piste, they deliver outstanding performance every time.

Their construction balances stability and agility, allowing for smooth transitions between different snow types. On-piste, the 17m radius makes carving intuitive and fluid, while off-piste, they provide enough float and maneuverability to tackle deeper snow. It’s rare to find skis that excel in both areas, but the Eagle Mach skis manage to do just that.

    Performance You Can Feel

From the very first run, I noticed how responsive these skis are. The length of 182 cm provides the perfect balance between control and power, giving me confidence even on steeper slopes. The radius of 17m strikes an ideal middle ground, making it easy to adapt my turns depending on the terrain and speed.

Their edge grip is another highlight. On icy sections, they hold firm, giving me the reassurance I need to push my limits. Meanwhile, in softer snow, they remain stable and playful, making every run enjoyable and dynamic.

    Built for Every Adventure

As someone who loves exploring both the piste and backcountry, I need skis that can keep up with my adventurous spirit. The Eagle Mach 182 cm skis are built for exactly that. Their lightweight yet durable construction means I can ski all day without feeling weighed down. Plus, their all-mountain design makes them a reliable choice no matter the conditions.

One of my favorite moments with these skis was tackling a mix of terrains in one day. From icy morning runs to powdery off-piste trails in the afternoon, they adapted seamlessly. It’s this adaptability that truly sets them apart from other skis I’ve used in the past.

Ski Lessons in Cervinia: From California Sunshine to Alpine Snow

Teaching skiing to two Californian girls who had never seen snow before was an unforgettable experience. In just two full days and one half day, they went from complete beginners to confidently skiing down Cervinia’s red run n6 bis. Here’s how their journey unfolded and how you too can learn quickly and effectively.

A Journey Begins: From Zero to Skiing Hero

When I met the two young women, their excitement was undeniable, but so was their nervousness. Facing the majestic peaks of the Alps for the first time can be overwhelming. After a quick safety briefing and an introduction to the basics—like posture and balance—we began with baby steps on the beginner slopes. Their determination to learn was evident right from the start.

Rapid Progress in Just Two Days

Day one focused on foundational skills: learning to stop, turn, and control their speed on gentle blue slopes. By the end of the first day, they were already showing great improvement. On day two, we leveled up to more advanced techniques such as carving and managing dynamic balance. Their positivity and dedication made all the difference, even when they faced challenges like frequent falls.

Conquering Cervinia’s Red Run n6 bis

The final test of their skills came on the third day: descending the red run n6 bis, one of Cervinia’s iconic slopes. After discussing the strategy and preparing mentally for the challenge, they tackled the slope with focus and enthusiasm. Every turn added to their confidence, and by the time we reached the bottom, their sense of achievement was unmatched. They had mastered something many beginners can only dream of.

Why Ski Lessons in Cervinia Are Unmissable

Cervinia offers an incredible setting for learning to ski, with its wide, well-groomed slopes and stunning Alpine views. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, personalized lessons can help you achieve remarkable progress in a short time.
